What to Expect During Your First Week with a Caregiver
Starting home care is a big step. Here is what the first week looks like, how to prepare, and tips for building a strong caregiver relationship from day one.
The decision to bring a caregiver into your home is a significant one, and it is completely normal to feel a mix of relief and anxiety. Understanding what to expect during the first week can help ease the transition for everyone involved.
Before the first visit, we conduct a thorough in-home assessment. This is where we learn about your loved one's daily routines, preferences, medical needs, and personality. We use this information to match them with a caregiver who is not just qualified but genuinely compatible.
On the first day, expect an introductory period. Your caregiver will arrive on time, introduce themselves, and spend time getting to know your loved one. They will review the care plan together and ask questions about preferences — from how they like their meals to what time they prefer to wake up.
During the first few days, there may be an adjustment period. It is normal for your loved one to feel a bit uncomfortable with someone new in their home. Our caregivers are trained to be patient, respectful, and to build trust gradually. They follow your loved one's lead rather than imposing their own routines.
Communication during the first week is essential. We encourage families to stay in close contact with our care coordinator. If something is not working — whether it is a schedule adjustment or a personality fit — we want to know right away so we can make changes quickly.
By the end of the first week, most families tell us they wish they had started sooner. The relief of knowing their loved one is safe, well-fed, and enjoying companionship is transformative. And for the person receiving care, having consistent, compassionate support often brings a renewed sense of independence and purpose.
At Sunrise Comfort Care, we stand behind our caregiver matching. If for any reason the fit is not right, we will reassign a new caregiver at no additional cost. Your satisfaction and your loved one's comfort are our top priorities.
